DeWine Picks Husted as Ohio’s Next Senator

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine picked Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted as Ohio’s next senator.

“The person who is suited to be the next United States Senator is a person who has been close to me the last six years. A person who almost daily I work with,” DeWine said. “And that person is Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted.”

Husted said it is his “honor to accept the appointment to serve the State of Ohio in the U.S. Senate.”

Previously, Husted served as Ohio Secretary of State, Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, and an Ohio State Senator, according to governor.ohio.gov.

Husted will replace JD Vance, who will be the vice president of the upcoming Trump administration.

Husted said that he looks forward to working with President-elect Donald Trump and Vance to Make America Great Again. He added that he “will do all” he can to make the Trump administration successful.

DeWine said he believes Husted is prepared to be Ohio’s next senator.

“I know his knowledge of Ohio. I know his heart. I know what he cares about. I know his skills. All of that tells me he is the right person for this job,” DeWine said.

“He has the background and experience to get the job done,” he added.

DeWine said he wanted a “workhorse,” someone he thought would “focus on Ohio.”

“As I was looking for the right person, I wanted someone who knew Ohio. Ohio is a complex state. I wanted someone who had a firm grasp and understanding of the greatness of Ohio. I wanted someone who knows the interaction between the federal government and state government,” the governor said.

Husted will serve for two years and then run again for Ohio Senate in 2026.

Ohio now has two new Republican senators: Husted and Bernie Moreno.

Moreno, who beat Sherrod Brown in November, congratulated Husted on X.

“I look forward to working together to deliver results for Ohio,” he said.

Center for Christian Virtue President Aaron Baer also celebrated DeWine’s choice of Husted.

“I’m grateful for Governor DeWine selecting a pro-life leader who understands the challenges Ohio communities and families are facing today,” Baer said.

“Along with Senator Bernie Moreno, Ohio will be a strong force in the U.S. Senate for faith, family, and freedom,” he added.
